Cory Booker is popular so far. He’s a sort of Obama 3.0. He’s making the scene in a very robust way, hogging headlines and raising eyebrows. He’s got a good record with people thanks to his outstanding career, his interesting background, and his bold attitude.
The only problem is that he’s a self-proclaimed social liberal. His voting record as a senator shows this quite clearly. His progressive behavior has painted him pretty blue despite hints that he’s not afraid to work across the table. He’s also an outspoken anti-Trump advocate who has not held back in his attempts to push against the president. This kind of partisan action is not going to sit well with moderates who are looking for someone a little more level headed.
Booker is also up against three powerful women, and it’s their time to shine. With Hillary’s defeat in 2016 still burning in their hearts, female voters are gearing up for a sure-fire victory in 2020. Booker’s biggest disadvantage right now is that he’s a man. He’s also a tad bit too extreme for America’s taste. In fact, it might be a long time, if ever, that we see a hard left liberal take the presidency anytime soon.
That doesn’t mean he won’t be a powerful Darkhorse candidate, like Bernie was to Hillary, it just means we won’t be betting on him to clinch the nomination. It would take nothing short of a miracle for him to find a way to overcome someone like Kamala Harris or Liz Warren.
Only time will tell.
