Chad Deals With Largest Refugee Population On The Planet As Drought Continues

The country of Chad has been dealing with some serious issues as of late. It’s neighbor to the west, Sudan, has been locked in a civil war that continues to displace the people living there, especially in the Darfur region. On top of that, Chad has dealt with a struggle against drought, as much of the country has been turned to desert after decades of stripping its forests and other natural resources. These two struggles combined have left the country on the brink of survival as it attempts to handle its woes.

The migrants crossing the western border between Chad and Sudan number in the millions; currently the largest gathering of refugees on the planet. They are mostly non-Muslims that have been chased off their farmland by roving militias in Sudan who target non-Muslim populations, even if they are peaceful and not involved in the war. This has led to groups of Sudanese leaving in mass over the border to Chad, where they hope to find food and water.

Due to deforestation, Chad has been under drought for quite some time. Climate Change is only making things worse.

As for the drought, the good news is that the rainy season is underway and the country should receive some much needed water supply. While it won’t be enough to bring the drought to an end, it should help with the current need. Unfortunately this also comes with a wave of Malaria cases due to the rampant mosquito population. Combined with hunger, the expected number of Malaria patients is expected to rise as the crisis in Sudan continues.
